Sunjuwan terror attack mastermind Mufti Waqas gunned down by Army

Army on Monday said mastermind of last month's fidayeen attack on an army camp at Sunjwan, Jammu was killed in a gunfight in Awantipora area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir.

"JeM's operational commander Mufti Waqas has been eliminated in a surgical attack", said Army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia.

A security official termed the killing of Waqas as a great setback for the revival of Jaish in the Valley.

The killing of Waqas is a major setback for the JeM as he was considered as the operational brain behind the group's attacks. During the operation, Mufti Waqas was killed. He was mastermind behind several terrorist attacks on security forces including Sunjwan attack.

Joshi said during the operation there were no civilian casualties or collateral damage. "This has resulted in a major dent to the designs of JeM as after elimination of their earlier operational commander Noor Mohd Tantrey in the same area in Dec 17, his successor too has been killed".

The Sunjwan attack had shaken the Army after four JeM militants stormed the camp on February 10 at 4.30 am and attacked the residential quarters of the soldiers.

Waqas, a Jaish-e-Mohammad militant, was wanted for carrying out the Sunjuwan army camp attack in which seven people were killed.

Indian security forces launched an operation following the attack and three militants were killed in the retaliation.
