The 2019 Audi A6 Gets More Screens, Mild Hybrid Drivetrain

The 2019 Audi A6 Gets More Screens, Mild Hybrid Drivetrain

Given that the US debut of the A6 isn't expected until the NY auto show in late March, it's not surprising that Audi has left out details for this market.

The 2019 Audi A6 looks pretty much like most of the company's other cars, but it offers something extra for gadget lovers, the automaker explained in a press release announcing the redesign.

Highly-specified variants will receive Audi's HD Matrix LED headlights with five horizontal lines making up the daytime running light signature. The paint range for the new A6 offers a choice of 14 colors, seven of which are new. Styling is neat and the lines are crisp, with a prominent waistline that originates at the doors and extends to the tail-lights, adding some dynamism to the look.

On the front fascia, the new A6 gets revised and bigger air dams with minor extensions below the bumper.

With its 2019 A6, Audi ups its tech game inside and underneath. That makes it fractionally longer and wider than the BMW 5-series, but 22mm lower.

The A6's interior mirrors the A7, at least as far as front-seat passengers are concerned.

Audi confidently declares that when in goes on sale in the United Kingdom in June, the fifth incarnation of the A6 will offer drivers a first class experience for business class prices. It gets the same MMI Touch control infotainment system which combines an 8in infotainment system with a 8.6in touch screen for climate control. It has been designed so the driver's wrist can rest on the gearlever. With built-in pressure sensors, the tires were of the run flat type, allowing the driver to cover more than 120 miles (193 kilometers) at speeds of up to 50 mph (80 kph) even with a flat tire. So the panel is broken in the middle and angled to the driver. The new navigation system is meant to be a cloud driven smart system that constantly updates itself based on the traffic conditions, generates intelligent suggestions and keeps a tab on your frequently used routes. Despite being slightly larger than the outgoing vehicle, the A6 is lighter than ever before thanks to an aluminium-steel construction that's also increased body rigidity.

Inside, Audi claims, there is more head room, shoulder room and rear leg room than before. The boot capacity remains unchanged at 530 liters and the trunk lid can be opened electrically with a kicking motion.

The new Audi A6 petrol, powered by a 3-litre V6 turbocharged engine churns out 335bhp and 500Nm of torque. European engine line-up from launch brings a 340bhp 3.0-litre TFSI with official Carbon dioxide emissions from 151g/km and a 282bhp 3.0 TDI with Carbon dioxide emissions from 150g/km. The mild-hybrid system switches off the engine and cruises between speeds of 55kph and 160kph. When decelerating, it switches off the engine between 6kph and 22kph. Next up is a larger 3.0-litre V6 diesel available in two states of tune - 228bhp and 286bhp. Engineers say this saves around 4g/km of CO2.

The family-look strategy applied by Audi for the past many years has proved to be successful, which is why many other luxury auto brands have followed suit with it. A four-cylinder, 2.0-litre petrol engine will join the range later. While it doesn't really stray away from the design cues of the outgoing model, the new Audi A6 brings a hefty load of improvements both on the outside and on the inside. A belt alternator starter (BAS) works together with a lithium-ion battery to fill the traditional turbocharger lag. "We focused on overall consumption rather than reduced weight". Additionally, during braking, the mild-hybrid system can cut out the A6's engine at speeds under 14 miles per hour to save even more fuel. Rear-wheel steering, a more rigid body and new dampers are created to improve handling and make the vehicle feel sportier. Standard progressive steering tightens up as the steering angle increases, while there's dynamic all-wheel steering too that allows both the front and rear wheels to turn.
