Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept Marks The Return Of Fabled Name

Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept Marks The Return Of Fabled Name

Thankfully Toyota is bringing it back, and the first step towards the launch is the showcase of the new auto.

Rumors regarding the return of the Supra began in earnest when Toyota and BMW announced a multi-venture pact in summer 2012 that included jointly developed sports cars. Most notably, the fourth generation Supra, introduced in 1993, became the dominant force in the All-Japan GT racing-today's Super GT series-winning the GT500 class four times.

Peer beneath that circuit-inspired veneer and you'll find Toyota's next sports vehicle, a relatively compact coupe with a classic front engine, rear-drive layout shared with BMW's next-generation Z4 Roadster.

Like its predecessors, the new, fifth-generation Supra will take to the race track, although Toyota isn't saying when this will take place. It's all about transfer of technology, something that Toyota founder Kiichiro Toyoda firmly believed in. The automaker describes Gazoo Racing as the "international umbrella organization" for its motorsports activities worldwide.

Developed by Toyota's Gazoo Racing department, the auto will headline updates to the Gran Turismo Sport video game this coming April. Lightweight yet strong materials are said to be used for parts like bumpers, front splitter, rear diffuser, etc.

The racing concept has a dramatic bodywork design that includes a large rear wing. The hood is crafted from the same material and features louvred air inlets. The braking system uses Brembo Racing calipers and discs, and there's also a racing exhaust on the menu.

Competition safety requirements are met by a full roll cage and fire extinguishers, and the fuel and brake lines, pedal box, battery and wiring looms are all created to competition standard. Everything is created to competition spec, which means there's a damned good chance you'll see this in Japan's Super GT racing league in the future.
