Trump Has Reportedly Spoken With Witnesses About What They Told Mueller Team

In one instance, Trump told an aide that McGahn should issue a statement denying a New York Times article in January that said the White House counsel told investigators the president had once asked him to fire Mueller.

The report added that such discussions "most likely did not rise to the level of witness tampering" but that it was problematic enough that the incidents were reported to Mueller.

Mueller is investigating potential collusion between Trump's winning 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, along with "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".

The aide, who was none other than former White House staff secretary and alleged domestic abuser Rob Porter, was also reportedly told McGahn could lose his job if he refused to dispute the story.

The witnesses are White House Counsel Donald McGahn and former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.

President Donald Trump has reportedly had conversations with two witnesses who have testified before special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators about the Russian Federation election meddling probe.

Additionally, CNN reported last month that Mueller's team has been asking witnesses about Trump's business activities in Russian Federation prior to the 2016 presidential campaign as he considered a run for president. But the investigation has apparently expanded beyond that initial scope.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment, while the special counsel's office declined comment.

A second source said the president simply asked Priebus how he was treated and whether investigators were "nice" to him.

"If he said anything along the lines of, 'There's potential criminal liability if you shut down this investigation, ' that would be extraordinarily powerful evidence against Trump".

The president said he had never ordered Mr. McGahn to fire the special counsel.

Based on public reporting and conversations with people close to the matter, Mueller's obstruction case appears closer to concluding than his investigation into whether members of Trump's campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the 2016 USA election in his favor.
