Trump's Trade War Backfires As Red States Defy Him

Trade wars are not won, they are only lost.

Rushing in to try to stop Trump as he blindly readies his plan to impose stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, angry Republican politicians, especially red state representatives, are getting an up-close look at what it's like dealing with an erratic, illogical president. But those exemptions weren't enough to placate congressional Republicans who have traditionally opposed protectionist action on trade.

President Trump said the duties would take effect in 15 days and would initially exempt Canada and Mexico. He pointed to the store's many products that rely on steel and aluminum.

Many Republicans hold that imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum are an abuse of this law and are pushing to restrict it. He says he expects the action to be challenged in court.

A 25 percent tax will be imposed on steel imports while a 10 percent tax will be imposed on aluminum imports.

Lee introduced separate legislation a year ago that would give Congress oversight of any trade policy, including implementing tariffs. President Trump spoke at length about how the USA industry had been taken advantage of over the years.

Business leaders, meanwhile, have continued to sound the alarm about the potential economic fallout from tariffs, with the president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce raising the specter of a global trade war.

The fight over tariffs comes amid intense turmoil in the West Wing, which has seen waves of departures and negative news stories that have left Trump increasingly isolated in the Oval Office, according to two senior officials speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal discussions.

European Union leader Jean-Claude Juncker also warned President Trump against imposing the tariffs, saying that EU nations would retaliate by placing similar tariffs on US imported products like Kentucky bourbon and blue jeans. Jeff Flake has threatened to introduce legislation to nullify the President's tariffs if they are anything like what Donald Trump is predicting.
