United Nations repeats call for Syria cease-fire

United Nations repeats call for Syria cease-fire

A reporter contributing to AFP saw the trucks on Thursday parked on the edges of Eastern Ghouta, at the government-controlled Wafideen checkpoint.

The state-affiliated al-Ikhbariya TV station on Wednesday broadcast live shots from the region, showing dense columns of smoke rising above the town as explosions and rockets could be heard flying overhead.

17 days into the offensive, the offensive came with airstrikes by both Syria and the Russian Air Force, killing at least 45 more civilians Wednesday.

The Security Council special session was called by France and the United Kingdom in an effort to persuade Syria and Russian Federation to comply with the resolution.

"Russia has gone on to ignore (a United Nations ceasefire's) terms and to kill innocent civilians under the false auspices of counter-terrorism operations", the White House said in a statement.

The Syrian government continues to make gains in its military offensive the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta, and is now reported to be in control of more than half of the shrinking rebel enclave.

That resolution called for a 30-day nationwide ceasefire and was passed by all 15 members of the Security Council on February 24.

Regime forces have been repeatedly accused of using chlorine on Eastern Ghouta in recent weeks, which both the government and its ally Russian Federation have staunchly denied.

Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said recent government shelling in Eastern Ghouta has killed 62 people, including eight children.

Meanwhile, Turkey called on the United States to prevent USA -backed Kurdish forces from sending fighters deployed against the Islamic State group to shore up Kurdish forces battling a Turkish offensive in an enclave in northwest Syria.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman said Wednesday that Turkey wants the United States to "step in and prevent" the redeployment.

Erdogan spokesman Ibrahim Kalin rejected that, saying the aim was to clear Syria of all terror groups.
