Water restrictions in the Rosses tonight from 11pm

Water restrictions in the Rosses tonight from 11pm

"We will probably have to introduce restrictions for a number of weeks, if not months, to come".

"They could remain in place for days or weeks so businesses can run during the day", said Mr Gallen.

Speaking after a National Emergency Coordination Group meeting, Irish Water head of operations Catherine Walsh said confirmed the high demand on service was in part caused by people running taps to stop pipes freezing.

"These are likely to continue for a number of days", adding it could be longer in Dublin.

The trunk mains serving Wexford town was damaged by a falling tree and repairs crews had to wade through more than three feet of snow into a wooded area to make repairs.

Those without water are include just over 300 in Cork; 800 in Williamstown in Galway; just over 1,000 in Tuosist in Kerry; 300 in south Dublin; and just over 2,300 in Waterford; and nearly 7,000 in Wexford.

Water tankers are being supplied to the area. Some 3,000 people have been affected by storm related boil water notices.

He urged households to conserve water by limiting use of washing machines and dishwashers, having shorter showers and turning the tap off when brushing teeth.

The company have said they are working to capacity due to "increasing demand coupled with weather related bursts and leaks".

Most are in Aughrim in Co Wicklow and the remainder are on small schemes across Waterford.

He said that efforts were being made to clean water as fast as possible, however reservoirs were continuing to drop.

In all 11,600 people are without water and an additional 126k have restricted supply due to low levels in reservoirs.

He said: "In the greater Dublin area we saw an increase of over 10% in demand from Friday to Sunday, and yesterday alone we saw a further increase in demand of over 20million litres". This is essential to allow our reservoirs to refill as repairs to bursts and leaks are underway.

Irish Water is appealing to customers to turn off taps and check for leaks on their own properties and in holiday homes and unoccupied premises and to report them to Irish Water's customer care helpline on 1850 278 278.
