Woman ISIS operative in Kerala Yasmeen Zahid gets 7-yr jail term

Yasmeen Mohammad Zahid, a native of Bihar was sentenced to 7 years of rigorous imprisonment for helping 15 Kerala youngsters in migrating from India to join the extremist outfit Islamic State by a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court on Saturday.

She has been found guilty of recruiting 15 people from the Kasargod district of Kerala for ISIS and sending them to Afghanistan.

Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid was intercepted at New Delhi International Airport on July 30, 2016 while she was exiting India for Kabul with the intention of joining her husband Abdul Rashid in the ISIS controlled territory in Nangarhar province of Afghanistan, which the accused persons consider as part of the Khorasan Wilayat of the Islamic State. Later the case was shifted from Kerala Police to NIA. Later the case was handed over to the NIA.

The Court said the evidence showed that the first and second accused had an inclination to join ISIS and in fact Abdul Rashid Abdulla along with his colleagues physically joined ISIS by reaching Afghanistan.

The NIA charge-sheet states that the mobile phone, SIM Cards and memory cards seized from Zahid were subjected to digital forensic examination, and it was found that the two memory cards contain "pro-ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) propaganda videos, videos advocating violent jihad, ISIS propaganda material as PDF documents, besides certain communication with Rashid and his wife". The agency had also stepped up its hunt for the remaining accused in the case with the help of Interpol. At least six were reportedly killed while fighting for the IS in Afghanistan. Abdulla recruited them by conducting classes at Kasargod and other places since 2015.

He had motivated his co-conspirators including Yasmeen Mohammed Zahid to join the terrorist organization waging war against Asiatic Powers at peace with the Government of India.

The probe has established that Abdulla had raised funds for the IS and transferred the money to Yasmeen, who utilised it for her activities with the intention of supporting the terrorist organisation.
