Woman killed by lion at S.Africa game lodge

Woman killed by lion at S.Africa game lodge

The 22-year-old was visiting a camp run by Kevin Richardson at the Dinokeng Game Reserve in Gauteng, near Johannesburg, when she was attacked on Tuesday morning.

The African News Agency reported that the female lion mauled the woman in the Hammanskraal area on Tuesday.

Paramedics say they arrived on the scene and found bystanders trying to administer CPR.

The SAPS from Cullinan were on the scene and are investigating the incident.

But the victim, who has not yet been named, died on the scene from her injuries, News24 reported.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said the attack occurred at around 11:00.

In April a year ago, a herd of eight elephants broke out of the reserve, which is 30 miles north of the Pretoria but they were soon recovered.

We assessed the landscape for other big 5 animals and as per procedure sent out a notification that we were walking in the reserve.

Metro.co.uk has contacted the Dinokeng Game Reserve for comment.

Earlier this month, a suspected poacher was killed and eaten by a pride of lions he was believed to be hunting at a private game reserve in South Africa.

While attacks from lions aren't necessarily common, they're not entirely unheard of either. The lions devoured his body - but his head was untouched.

Richardson campaigns against the South African industry in which customers kill captive-bred lions in relatively confined areas, and told the AP that numerous lions in his care were rescued from being transferred to facilities where the practice labeled by critics as "canned hunting" occurs.
