YouTube dark mode starts hitting mobile, Android expected 'soon'

It looks like Google is in the process of rolling out a new update for the YouTube app, which will add a new dark mode, similar to the one that's been released on desktop previous year. "Dark theme", and letting you toggle it on right away.

YouTube looks much better with the dark theme, and the viewing experience is definitely superior. YouTube says Dark theme was one of the "top requested features on mobile".

Back in January, Mac Rumors reported the initial test of dark mode on iOS after a Reddit user found the feature in his recently updated YouTube app. It's a very simple setting that can make a big difference when it comes to using the app on mobile devices.

To activate the mode, you simply tap your account profile picture in the YouTube app, navigate to Settings, and flick on "Dark mode".

Darker themes are easier on the eyes, making it easier for viewers to watch videos for an extended period.

YouTube's update is reportedly being done to reduce glare and give the app a more "cinematic view" as its users consume videos and even movies on the platform. The app will automatically switch to a darker hue, with no app restart necessary for the change to go into effect.
