Air China flight diverted after passenger threatens crew with fountain pen

Air China flight diverted after passenger threatens crew with fountain pen

A Beijing-bound Air China flight on Sunday morning made an emergency landing after a man hijacked it with a pen.

Air China said in the post that the plane made the unplanned landing owing to public safety concerns and that the police and civil aviation authorities were taking care of the situation. The flight took off from Changsha, the capital of southern Human province and was scheduled to arrive at the Beijing Capital International Airport during afternoon 1:00 pm (China's local time).

The Civil Aviation Administration of China said a male passenger on Flight 1350 tried to use the pen to hold a flight attendant "under duress", according to Reuters.

Chinese police informed that initial inquiries revealed that the forty-one-year-old man who is identified only by his last name Xu, had a prior history of mental illness.

The Zhengzhou airport says it immediately activated emergency measures and that the airport is operating normally. Police arrested him at about 1pm, according to the statement. Media reports suggest that the authorities refused to provide any further information and it is still unclear that if the interference referred to any possible hijacking attempt.

Passengers and crew were unharmed, the statement said.

Beijing News said on Weibo that a passenger described being awoken by a scream coming from the front of the plane and that "nobody knew what was going on". The passenger described seeing armed personnel in camouflage uniforms assembled in two or three rows.
