AJ Michalka To Star In 'The Goldbergs' 1990s Spinoff!

AJ Michalka To Star In 'The Goldbergs' 1990s Spinoff!

Don't count out the faculty at William Penn Academy.

A 1990s-set spinoff of "The Goldbergs" - but not quite the version viewers saw in an episode of the show earlier this season - has earned a series pickup at ABC.

The untitled spinoff (aka Schooled) will be set in 1990-something and follow the hilarious teachers of William Penn Academy - led by Tim Meadows (Principal Glascott), Bryan Callen (Coach Mellor) and AJ Michalka (Lainey Lewis) - who, despite their eccentricities and insane personal lives, are heroes to their students. They aired the pilot in January as part of the actual series. It was watched by 6 million viewers and a 1.7 rating in 18-49, the top show in that advertiser-coveted demographic for the night. Like the mothership series, it will be a co-production by Sony Pictures TV and ABC Studios.

Goldberg first had the idea in 2016, "because Bryan Callen is so incredible and he just keeps coming back on that show".

Last year, ABC considered a spinoff of the '80s-era comedy, focusing on teachers at the high school that the Goldberg kids attended. "It had a diverse cast they were looking for, and it had two of the most popular characters from its No. 2 show". Goldberg and exec producer Marc Firek kept the idea alive, however, and ABC aired the pilot as an episode of "The Goldbergs" in January.

Based on the childhood of creator Adam F. Goldberg, the series follows "a young Adam as he and his eccentric family try to get by in the wonderland we know as the 1980's".
