APC members defect to PDP in Bayelsa

One time factional national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Senator Modu Ali Sheriff is set to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC today.

Led by Sheriff's former vice chairman, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, defectors to the APC also included Senator Gbemi Saraki, senator Hope Uzodinma, Ali Gulak, senator Abubakar Gada and 36 states chairmen, who stormed the national secretariat of the ruling party, yesterday.

The party asked the former governor to go back to his ward to formally signify his intention to return to APC, adding that membership cards are not issued in Abuja.

Media reports had indicated that Sheriff would be received formally into the party by national officials by 12pm on Thursday, April 26, 2018.

Chairman of Bayelsa State chapter of People's Democratic Party (PDP), Hon Moses Cloepas, said only the party had the capacity to defeat Federal might as it did in 2016 when Governor Henry Seriake Dickson was re-elected against all odds.

He said, "Yes, we have moved to the APC; I and former Governor Sheriff have left the PDP for the APC and there are reasons". This is the first time that this magnitude of event is happening since the amalgamation and since the APC came into being.

"In fact, the biggest faction of the PDP and I can say it is our luck that we are taking a better part of the PDP today", he said.

This action, it was gathered, was an indication to Sheriff and his supporters that the party was not favourably disposed to his joining the party.

Caretaker Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Council, Mr. Ofoji Okpoku, who was absent from the briefing organised by the State Ministry of Information and Orientation led by Commissioner Daniel Markson-Iworiso, however, his account in the council was read by the State Commissioner for Local Government, Mrs. Agatha Goma.

"The only difference in future is the level of commitment and that in veteran politicians, I am sure that the terrain is not new to you because it is a terrain that you are used to".

Another source said Shettima is also strategizing on the way forward.

A PDP youth leader in Maiduguri, Umar Sanda, who spoke with our correspondent on phone, said they were aware of Sheriff's defection.

According to him in 2019, the Chairman said PDP will re-enact its winning streak by sweeping the polls to demonstrate that Bayelsa was wholly a PDP state.
