Canada bars diplomats from bringing family to Cuba

Canada bars diplomats from bringing family to Cuba

The Canadian government has recalled families of its diplomatic staff in the Cuban capital, Havana.

Questions emerged "more recently" with information from Canadian medical specialists involved in the evaluation of affected diplomats and dependents as well as from United States specialists that "raised concerns for a new type of a possible acquired brain injury", the ministry said.

The Canadians, including some minors, have suffered from dizziness, nausea and difficulty concentrations ng.

Canada on Monday said American and Canadian specialists examining those affected had "raised concerns for a new type of a possible acquired brain injury".

Due to the uncertainty, Canada's embassy in Cuba will be designated as an unaccompanied post, meaning diplomats will not be stationed with their families, the government said in a separate statement. In some cases, the symptoms have lessened in intensity before returning, the official said.

The mysterious illnesses were originally believed to be caused by covert sonic attacks.

US diplomats in Cuba began reporting similar mystery symptoms in 2016 and Washington reportedly began investigating the possibility that they had been targeted by ultrasonic devices.

The US State Department said last August that Americans linked to its embassy in Cuba had experienced physical symptoms caused by unspecified "incidents" starting as far back as late 2016.

The Canadian Foreign Affairs Ministry said Canada is working with the U.S. after the previous environmental assessment of its staff housing in March failed to turn up a cause. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez of Cuba described the accusations as "political manipulation" in October, the BBC reports.

Global Affairs also emphasized that it had a "positive and constructive relationship with Cuba and has received close cooperation from the Cuban authorities since health concerns of Canadians serving in Cuba first surfaced in the spring of 2017".
