Chelsea legend Ray Wilkins dies aged 61 after suffering cardiac arrest

The ex-Chelsea and Manchester United star suffered a cardiac arrest last week and spent his final days in an induced coma at a hospital in south London.

Trevor Steven tweeted: "Sad beyond belief". Through his broadcast work later in life he shared his love and knowledge of the game with millions of football fans. "A true gentleman and one of the nicest guys I've ever met".

THE FOOTBALL world was saddened today to learn of the death of former England midfielder Ray Wilkins at the age of 61.

Wilkins had been working as a TV and radio pundit. "He will be sorely missed by so many".

He jumped over the barriers when he scored, running quickly to celebrate, and it was a special moment that I'm sure so many will remember him by, because his passion and enthusiasm were so infectious. "Rest in peace, Ray, you will be dreadfully missed", the club said on Twitter.

The late player's family said they wanted to "thank St George's staff for the awesome work they have done to care for our beloved Ray".

"We would also like to say thank you for the many goodwill messages we have received from Ray's friends, colleagues, and members of the public".

"Ray leaves behind his loving wife, Jackie, daughter Jade, son Ross, and his handsome grandchildren, Oliver, Frankie, Ava, Freddie, Jake and Archie".

He also worked as a coach, winning the title alongside Carlo Ancelotti.

Wilkins began his career in west London at Chelsea in what was then a hard time for the now prosperous club both on and off the field.

Manchester United tweeted: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Manchester United are with the family, friends and colleagues of our former midfielder Ray Wilkins, following his tragic passing". These appointments were punctuated when Wilkins landed the role of head coach of the Jordanian national team where he remained for just over a year.
