Commonwealth Games: England shock hosts Australia 52-51 in netball final

"I was disappointed, but I managed to pick myself up", said Ouseph.

"It was the intention of the Closing Ceremony creative to have the athletes involved from the very start of the show, enabling them to be all part of the celebrations, " read the statement.

"They made the decision not to show the flagbearers".

There was also concern after a large portion of the athletes and spectators left the ceremony before it had finished, leaving the stadium looking a little bare. "When people in wheelchairs get kicked off airlines, kicked off facilities, when they're not getting access to education, when they are issues with employment, I will fire up and grab everyone along with me".

"We wanted athletes to be part of and enjoy the Closing Ceremony".

The breaking of tradition meant that athletes were denied the spotlight and left out of the event, as their entry wasn't broadcast or shared with viewers.

"We can only show the pictures that are provided by the actual host broadcasters", Griggs said.

"We were driven by the welfare of athletes".

"I think either way they were going to do it, there was going to be quite a bit of standing around", he told Channel 7. You want to see them celebrating 11 days of great sport.

The ceremony has been described as lacking star power even with sprinting legend Usain Bolt hitting the DJ decks and dancing with mascot Borobi during the spectacle. "I've never seen the stadium so empty halfway through a ceremony".

Helen Housby held her nerve in the final second to score the winning goal as England upset the heavily favoured Australians 52-51 and clinch a dramatic netball gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday (April 15).
