Commonwealth Games: Scotland win lawn bowls women's pairs bronze

The hope of Nigeria winning gold or silver medals in boxing was dashed on Friday at the ongoing Commonwealth Games here in Gold Coast, Australia with the boxers settling for bronze medals.

Mr Lyonga called on the athletes to re-join the team, saying that they would not face consequences in Cameroon.

The Cameroon delegation reported the issue to Australian police, who have stated they will not investigate until the athletes have officially overstayed their visas.

Five boxers and three weightlifters - representing a third of the Cameroon team - disappeared from the athletes' village at Griffith University on Wednesday, the Cameroon delegation declared.

The accreditation given to athletes for the Commonwealth Games acts as a short-term visa to the host country.

He said he "doesn't think they'll come back".

Earlier in the day, Australia's men's fours took home a silver medal in a dramatic loss to Scotland that saw them go down 15-13.

The first round of missing athletes were discovered on Sunday when three of the team "departed the village".

The Cameroonians failing to appear in their events saddened Commonwealth Games Federation chief David Grevemberg.

"Our aim is to help every Australian experience the excitement and passion of the Games across the many screens of Seven and through social channels".

Cameroon's remaining two weightlifters, along with the country's basketball team, were already heading home, the team added.

Anyone in Australia on a valid visa is legally entitled to claim asylum, but if that is what the Cameroon athletes are planning to do is unknown.

"If there is a breach Peter Dutton and the department will deal with it".
