CWG 2018, day 10: Sumit Malik clinches gold in wrestling

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has won gold in the Women's 50kg freestyle category at the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

Sakshi Malik took the bronze medal in the women's 62kg category. Soon after Sakshi added another medal to her resume, Twitter was full of praise for her. She had won the World Championships in 2012 and is also a bronze medalist in the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi. As if that was not enough, she remains undefeated in her weight category after defeating the likes of Australia's Rupinder Kaur and Nigeria's Miesinnei Genesis. She will try for bronze now. Malik outscored her opponent by one point, winning the match six points to five.

However, her Canadian counter-part, who was restless after the first round challenged her for a round two, but failed to get better of the Indian star.

Malik stayed unbeaten throughout the tournament. defeating Cameroon's Claude Kouamen Mbianga, Canada's Korey Jarvis and Pakistan's Tayab Raza without any discomfort. The second Indian gold from the mat on Saturday was claimed by Sumit Malik in the men's freestyle 125 kg after his opponent Nigeria's Sinivie Boltic was ruled out of the final due to an injury.

Apart from the three gold medals, India claimed two Silver, both coming in boxing through Amit Phangal and Manish Kaushik.

Malik hails from Karor in Haryana's Rohtak district and had won a silver at both the Asian and Commonwealth championships past year.

Later, in the last India bout of the day, Somveer ensured that it ended on a bright note as he clinched the 86kg category bronze.

With the four wrestling medals, India's tally has now swelled up to 52 medals (23 Gold, 13 Silver and 16 Bronze), which further strengthened the third spot on the medals tally table.
