"If we don't like the direction our government is going in, we have to step up".

The Democratic primary will be September 13, and Cuomo has a lot at stake as a possible presidential candidate in 2020.

In addition to her love for New York, Nixon pointed to the election of President Donald Trump as motivation to run, calling it "a real wake-up call" for her as well as women across the country.

The exclusion of a Black female legislative leader from NY state's budget negotiations is an example of how the Democratic Party needs to do a better job promoting women leaders, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon said in her first nationally broadcast television interview aired Wednesday.

"It is tough. People talk a lot to me about being a celebrity entering this race". Cuomo defended his record during an interview aired on NY1 Tuesday night, saying his is better than any other NY governor in modern history, which would include his father, Mario, who was governor from 1983-1994.

The New York Times reports Tuesday the "Sex and the City" star told supporters at a private fundraiser in Manhattan she would legalize pot and put a tax on it to raise revenue for New York.

Nixon, who reiterated that she's "never lived anywhere else" apart from NY, believes that her love for the city and residency makes her more relatable than the public could believe. "I'm running as a New York City subway rider; that's enough to make anyone want to run nowadays!"

The Emmy award actress announced her run for the NY governor's seat back in January, planning to go up against current Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic Primary.

Nixon also addressed the tragic shooting and death of an unarmed African-American man, Stephon Clark.

'What you need is somebody who understands the process and understands to get things done, and cut through the politics and cut through the blather, ' Cuomo said.

Finally, Nixon touched upon the hot topic of the legalization of marijuana, and made her thoughts inescapably clear: "I am absolutely for the legalization of marijuana".

However, in the clip provided to Us Weekly, Nixon added: "We love the clothes!"
