Dozens reported killed in suspected Syria gas attack

They did not identify the substance used, but the Syrian Civil Defence and the Syrian American Medical Society said survivors treated at clinics smelled strongly of chlorine. Others put the toll at 150 or more.

Activists circulated a video showing presumably dead men, women and children, some with foam at the mouth, the news agency added.

Britain's foreign secretary says reports of a deadly chemical weapons attack in Syria are "deeply disturbing", and warns that Russian Federation must not try to block an global investigation.

London called for an investigation into what it said were the "deeply disturbing" reports and Ankara, which has backed rebels against Assad, said it had a "strong suspicion" he was to blame.

The US, UK, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pope Francis condemned Saturday's chemical gas attack on Syria's Douma, while Russian Federation and the Syrian regime denied claims of chemical weapons use.

Russia, however, dismissed the reports.

Major General Yuri Yevtushenko, head of the Russian Centre for Reconciliation of the Warring Sides in Syria, denied the claims.

A joint report from the United Nations and worldwide chemical weapons inspectors last October determined the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad was responsible for the attack.

Facing military defeat, rebel groups in other parts of eastern Ghouta have taken safe passage to other opposition-held areas at the Turkish border.

Fighting had lulled in recent days as Russian Federation, a key ally of the Assad government in its seven-year-long civil war, engaged in negotiations with Jaish al-Islam, the rebel group in control of Douma.

Nevertheless, Syrian state tv stated on Sunday Jaish al-Islam had requested for negotiations with the federal government.

Jaish al-Islam had been in talks with government ally Moscow over the town's fate and had been hoping to secure a deal that would allow them to remain in control.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 11 people had died as a result of suffocation caused by the smoke from conventional weapons being dropped by the government.

"Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria".

A joint statement from SAMS and the White Helmets this morning said medics had treated more than 500 people with breathing difficulties, frothing from the mouth and smelling of chlorine. "The bulk have been civilians, ladies and youngsters trapped in underground shelters", he advised Reuters.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) also said the appeal by Jaysh al-Islam came after "the painful blows they received due to the decisive military operation and attacks on their positions and hotbeds in Douma".

"The Syrian regime must give account for the attacks in various regions of the country at different times", a spokesman for President Tayyip Erdogan said.

"The army, which is advancing rapidly and with determination, does not need to use any kind of chemical agents", the statement said.

A United Nations mission confirmed the use of sarin, and Western powers attributed the attack to the Syrian government.

"We have received report of many people killed and injured in Duma in the past 24 hours".

The European Union says that following reports of another chemical attack in the Syrian war, evidence points toward the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

In Rome, Pope Francis condemned the use of chemical weapons in Syria, "There is not a good war and a bad one, and nothing, nothing can justify the use of such devices of extermination against defenseless people and populations".
