Dwayne Johnson's "Ramage" takes top spot at box office

But, surprisingly for a film that features giant monsters smashing things, it squeaked past, earning $34.5 million, according to studio estimates.

The film pulled in a disappointing $32M (Dh117.5M) on its opening weekend in the United States - some way off the $40M early tracking had hoped for - and could only manage second place at the box office behind John Krasinski's surprise hit horror A Quiet Place, which retained top spot for a second week.

Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One" - a futuristic homage to films of the 1980s - took in an estimated US$11.2 million to cling to fourth place in its third week out (its budget was a not-so-minuscule US$175 million). Other big markets include Mexico ($4.8 million from 2,831 screens), Malaysia ($3.5 million from 590 screens), Indonesia ($3.1 million from 687 screens), and Russian Federation ($3.1 million from 2,668 screens).

Overseas, Rampage roared loudly in China, biting off $55 million for a foreign debut of $114.1 million and solid global start of $148.6 million. The Paramount hit has collared $99 million in the U.S. and $51.7 million in the rest of the world, with France, Spain, Japan and China ahead.

Directed by and co-starring John Krasinski, A Quiet Place mustered $2.3 million in its second weekend, down a mere 4 per cent, climbing to $6 million. In China alone, the film has earned $193.8 million.

The sophomore weekend of Universal's "Blockers" grossed $3.9 million in 21 territories.

Sci-fi action flick "Rampage" topped North American box offices over the weekend.

Third place went to the low-budget Blumhouse horror movie Truth or Dare, which brought in an estimated $19.1 million in its first three days in theaters after opening on Friday the 13th. The raunchy comedy from Kay Cannon accumulated $10.3 million in North America this weekend, with a worldwide total of $52.9 million. Decent debuts by Truth of Dare and Isle of Dogs plus remarkably strong holdover business for Peter Rabbit and A Quiet Place helped keep cinemas busy.
