Facebook says you'll soon be able to 'unsend' texts after Zuckerberg caught

We may never know what messages belonging to Zuckerberg Facebook wants to hide.

The company planned to use "hashing" to match individuals who existed in both data sets to glean insights that would improve healthcare, initially in cardiovascular health, its pitch claimed.

No notifications were sent to those who had messages deleted, nor was there any disclosure that such a thing was even possible.

London-based Cambridge Analytica, which has counted US President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign among its clients, said on Wednesday on Twitter that it had received no more than 30 million records from a researcher it hired to collect data about people on Facebook.

That Facebook app called This is Your Digital Life was a personality quiz created in 2014 by an academic researcher named Aleksander Kogan, who paid about 270,000 people to take it. However, the timing of the announcement only comes after the company was caught deleting messages sent by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Instead, he said that the move is aimed primarily at stopping external organisations from spreading disinformation as happened in the 2016 United States presidential election and the Brexit referendum the same year.

In order to prevent election interference on its platform, Facebook has introduced new changes to increase transparency and accountability for electoral ads and Pages.

- More importantly, Facebook is tightening its review process and will only approve an app that requests access to information such as check-ins, likes, photos, posts, videos, events and groups after the app meets certain requirements.

In an interview with BuzzFeed News yesterday, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg made clear what Facebook needs to do to regain user trust: "It's not about what we say, it's what we do".

Zuckerberg acknowledged the company had not done enough to protect user data, saying it must take a more serious approach after years of being "idealistic" about how the platform is used.

The data sharing project was reportedly devised by Facebook's secretive research department known as Building 8. Facebook added that this is how the feature functioned for its executives on Messenger, and that it could be how it will operate for the broader public.

The revelation follows closely after the Cambridge Analytica leak, coming at a time when many people are calling for a total boycott of Facebook's products. However, malicious actors have also abused these features to scrape public profile information by submitting phone numbers or email addresses they already have through search and account recovery.

Call and Text History: Call and text history is part of an opt-in feature for people using Messenger or Facebook Lite on Android.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg said on Thursday that around the world as many as 87 million people could be affected by the Cambridge Analytica breach, which has sent the company into turmoil and raised questions about data protection for the entire tech sector.

But its business model depends on collecting that information and ensuring that advertisers can access much of it.
