Facebook's Sandberg says other cases of data misuse possible

Facebook's Sandberg says other cases of data misuse possible

They require users to provide key and often sensitive information, and users do not have an option to opt-out.

Facebook would not likely be free to use if there were no data-targeted ads, the social media site's COO, Sheryl Sandberg, said Friday on NBC News.

"We really believed in social experiences".

Sandberg acknowledged, once again, that Facebook didn't do enough to protect users' data, adding, "I'm really sorry for that".

CA is under investigation in both the United States and the UK for the way it harvested 87 million users' data from Facebook and then used that to target voters on behalf of President Trump's election campaign in the USA and the Brexit referendum in the UK. But we were way too idealistic.

"We thought the data had been deleted and we should have checked", she said.

"I think what really matters is that we learn from what's happened. That's why we are doing the audit".

"It is definitely the case in 2016 that we were behind and we didn't understand that kind of election interference", Sandberg said.

Sandberg's admission comes as the social media giant struggles to address mounting security concerns in the wake of revelations that 87 million Facebook users may have had their data harvested by Cambridge Analytica, the controversial data firm that was employed for a time by President Trump's campaign during the 2016 presidential election.

"We have to think about everything we share as containing tonnes of data and information that can be extracted and shared amongst a lot of different people".

"We've seen a few advertisers pause with us and they're asking the same questions that other people are asking", Ms Sandberg said on Thursday in an interview at Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

"That was something we should have caught, we should have known about", she told NPR.

The company could have done an audit, but did not, she said.

Their formal complaint with the FTC accuses Facebook of automatically enlisting most users into the facial scanning. "You build something; someone's going to try to get around it".

She also revealed that Facebook would introduce in America similar privacy standards to those that will be enforced in Europe later this year under the EU's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and ePrivacy laws.

Jackie Williams of Jefferson County filed a federal lawsuit against Facebook over the Cambridge Analytica situation.

Sandberg joined Facebook as second in command in 2008 and was then touted as the adult in the room who would help company co-founder Zuckerberg by bringing management expertise she had gained from six years at Google.
