Fake Doctor Caught at AIIMS

The 36-year-old PhD student from the Microbiology department had allegedly attempted suicide at his residence in Gautam Nagar by overdosing on drugs on March 25 and had accused his supervisor of mental harassment, abuse and delay in his fellowship.

The police were surprised with his elaborate knowledge about medicine but that doesn't excuse his lack of qualification to be a doctor. The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) has written a letter to the authorities of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and expressed concern over the issue. Police said the man, Adnan Khurram from Bihar's Sitamarhi district, was charged under IPC sections 419 and 468 at Hauz Khas police station and sent to Tihar. "Also, she will not be guiding any student for the next three years", said an AIIMS doctor and member of the committee.

RDA president Harjit Singh said Khurram had been noticing his activities in the medical campus for the past many months and chose to keep a watch. He would roam around the campus wearing the lab coat and stethoscope all the time. As he was not able to answer questions from the doctors in a satisfactory manner, he was arrested by the police.

But all his claims fell flat after the doctors found him participating in a marathon organised by the doctors on Saturday. "To some, he would claim that he was a junior resident doctor while to junior resident doctors, he would introduce himself as an undergraduate medical student", the newspaper reported.

Khurram has studied till Class X and has no criminal record.

During interrogation, Khurram told police that he was impersonating a doctor to ensure that his sister was admitted to AIIMS timely while in another statement, he said he posed as a doctor as he liked the profession and wanted to spend time with other doctors. "He had even made his way to the WhatsApp groups".

"As AIIMS consists of at least 2,000 resident doctors, it is very hard to know each and every person personally", he added.

Deputy commissioner of police (south) Romil Baaniya said Khurram was handed over to them on Saturday and has been charged under sections 419 (impersonation) and 468 (forgery for goal of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code at Hauz Khas Police Station.

There were also photographs of him with politicians.
