Will Google be able to address the data privacy problem before it further escalates? But what happens when that data collection targets children? "While many of these SDKs offer configuration options to respect COPPA by disabling tracking and behavioral advertising, our data suggest that a majority of apps either do not make use of these options or incorrectly propagate them across mediation SDKs", the study states.

The researchers, who are affiliated with the International Computer Science Institute, used an automated testing process to examine 5,855 apps found in the Google Play store. The study also found that 40 percent of the apps transmitted information without using proper security measures.

About 40 percent of apps transmitted info without using "reasonable security measures", and almost all 1,280 apps with Facebook tie-ins were not properly using the social network's code flags to limit under-13 use. "The researchers published their findings in a study (PDF) titled, "'Won't Somebody Think of the Children'?

Of those apps improperly collecting data, 281 collected contact or location data without parental permission.
