Hand dryers blow fecal particles all over your hands, study claims

What's more, the inside of the dryer nozzles themselves had "minimal bacterial levels". Well, your office hand dryer might actually be spreading fecal bacteria onto your hands and throughout your building.

Hand dryers were found by an analysis from the scientists in the University of CT in men and females'bacteria were blown by therefore baths onto hands such as mosquito issue. The results were published this month in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology. The bathroom air samples returned substantially fewer colonies than the hand dryer sample.

"Bacteria in bathrooms will come from feces, which can be aerosolized a bit when toilets, especially lidless toilets, are flushed", Setlow said, via Yahoo. Unlike other types of B. subtilis often found in soil, this strain is only found in laboratory environments. Bacterial spores, Setlow explained, had probably traveled throughout the research building from a lab.

What's unclear, they admit, is just why the air-blasted plates showed so many more spores. Spore-forming colonies, identified as B. subtilis PS533, averaged ∼2.5 to 5% of bacteria deposited by hand dryers throughout the basic research areas examined regardless of distance from the spore-forming laboratory, and these were nearly certainly deposited as spores.

Researchers found that "many kinds of bacteria, including potential pathogens and spores, can be deposited on hands exposed to bathroom hand dryers".

In theory, adding high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters should stop bacteria particles from spraying over your newly cleaned hands. Although that's a lot, it certainly isn't ideal.

Researchers examined plates exposed to just 30 seconds of a hand dryer compared to those left in, you know, just plain feces-filled air. Researchers say the machines, which are created to blow hot air on you, are actually sucking up feces particles and spraying them onto your hands. He said the bathrooms they analyzed offer paper towels.
