Harvard Student Arrested for Streaking While Allegedly High on Drugs

Selorm Ohene, 21, was arrested on Friday night in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and charged with disorderly conduct, indecent exposure, resisting arrest and assault when Cambridge police found him naked in the middle of a street.

Cambridge Mayor Marc McGovern, a Democrat, said that an internal investigation is now taking place regarding the behavior of the police officers, according to The Boston Globe.

"Because use of force was required in order to gain compliance from Ohene to avoid further injury to himself, the responding officers or any on-lookers", Cambridge police said in a statement, "an internal review will be conducted by the department's leadership and professional standards unit".

He'd been the subject of seven emergency calls that evening, including one from a woman who claimed Ohene had thrown his clothes at her.

Cellphone video recorded by a bystander and released by the police shows one of the officers punching Ohene a total of five times while the student is lying on the ground. Bard said videos of the event show that the officers standing around the undergraduate attempted to speak with the student "for a long period of time".

"I absolutely do support the officers". In a rapidly-evolving situation, as this was, the officers primary objective is to neutralize an incident to ensure the safety of the involved party (ies), officers and members of the public. "Cambridge affirms that Black Lives Matter, but it must be true in practice as well", he said in a statement Sunday.

Asked if officers hit the man while he was on the ground, he responded, "The officers are trained to use the least amount of force necessary".

The statement continued, "He was surrounded by at least four Cambridge Police Department (CPD) officers who, without provocation, lunged at him, tackled him and pinned him to the ground".

In a redacted police report, the officer wrote, "Unable to pry Ohene's hands from underneath his body, I delivered approximately 5 strikes with a closed fists to the area of his stomach".

However, no officers were struck during the arrest. An officer appears to grab the student's legs from behind, prompting both of them to fall.

Editor's Note: This video contains scenes and explicit language that some may find disturbing.

Ohene's arrest was caught on video, and drew an outcry from Harvard's Black Law Students Association. "These seemed ineffective. Eventually Officer Maziarz was able get control of Ohene's right arm and place it behind his back where it was placed in a handcuff by Officer Harney". Mr. Bard said the report would be made public as soon as it was completed.

Commissioner Branville Bard said if Ohene's face-off with police was linked to mental health issues, it's possible they drop the charges entirely.

Ohene is "currently recovering from the injuries sustained during his encounter with the Cambridge Police", according to a press release shared by his attorneys. "So the individual is now being evaluated to see if they fit that set of circumstances", he said.

"A naked, unarmed Black man stood still on the median at the center of Massachusetts Avenue across from Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church", the group's statement said.

In response to questioning from reporters at the briefing, Bard specifically discussed one CPD officer's decision to repeatedly punch the student in the stomach.

"A pool of blood remained on the pavement as the ambulance departed", according to the Black Law Students Association.

The officers' handling of the incident has caused controversy in the community, with Cambridge Mayor Marc McGovern terming what is shown on the video "disturbing. Shortly thereafter, firefighters came and cleaned up the blood with bleach and water".

Idowu said all police departments should have body camera programs - and Cambridge does not.
