Homeless Girl Scout Troop Holds Its First Girl Scout Cookie Sale

Homeless Girl Scout Troop Holds Its First Girl Scout Cookie Sale

The troop was started previous year by Giselle Burgess who, alongside the Girl Scouts of Greater New York and New York City's Department of Homeless services, wanted to provide the group of girls a sense of reassurance that they were a part of a larger community, NY 1 reports.

The problem? The troop was having trouble finding a place to sell their Girl Scout cookies. A report last year by the Institute for Children, Poverty, and Homelessness found that the typical homeless elementary school student missed 88 days of school ― nearly half the school year.

Selling cookies was a particular challenge for this group, as its members come from all over the city. The troop, which is exclusively for homeless girls in the city, has set up shop in Union Square and are holding their very first Girl Scout cookie sale. They began selling on Tuesday, and hoped to hawk 6,000 boxes initially.

Research has shown that young women involved in Girl Scouts have a stronger sense of self, and achieve higher levels of education, and are more likely to reach a higher socioeconomic status.

Boxes of Girl Scout cookies are stacked at the Troop 6000 cookie sale in New York's Union Square in April 2018.

The mother has taught the girls first aid, the history of women's suffrage and financial literary.

Troop 6000 was established in March of 2017 through a partnership between New York City's Department of Homeless Services and the Girl Scouts of Greater New York.

Summer is right around the corner, and the Girl Scouts of South Alabama are inviting all girls to summer camp!

On my honor, I will try, to not eat all these cookies, at least not in one sitting, ahem.

In February this year, there were 63,343 homeless people, including 15,546 families with 23,314 children, in New York City's shelter system, according to the Coalition For The Homeless.

'I think girls are hearing different messages socially and its our job as a leadership organization for girls in New York City to step up and make sure that their voice is heard, ' she said. Kellogg Company happens to own Little Brownie Bakers, which makes the Girl Scout cookies for the Girl Scouts of Greater New York.
