House Conservatives Make a Play for Influence in Race to Succeed Ryan

One White House official said there are worries among the President's aides that Ryan's choice not to seek re-election might signal to other members who are concerned about losing their races that they shouldn't run, either.

Even before Ryan's announcement, many political analysts were predicting Democrats will win the majority of House seats in the November election.

Other Republicans, such as New York Representative Peter King, expressed wariness about the bid by conservatives, who've pressed the party not to compromise with Democrats. There was a coinciding slide in the percentage of Americans who viewed Ryan favorably, to 39% in April 2017 from 48% in November 2016.

If you don't believe me just look at how hard it was for him to corral the votes for the repeal and replacement of Obamacare - something Republicans have been running on for years.

Ryan also said that he's confident that special counsel Robert Mueller and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein won't be fired. Around the same time, 86% of Democrats said they approved of the ACA.

But on Wednesday, Ryan had no criticism for Trump, saying he was "grateful" to Trump for "giving us this opportunity to do big things", such as the tax-cut plan.

But the career decision Ryan announced Wednesday morning amounts to a forecast of political weather for 2018 and beyond. Ryan had to navigate the waters of a party that was not only fighting from within, but that was hijacked by a president whose erratic behavior has never been helpful.

Ryan, who has been in office since 1999 and speaker since 2015, said he wanted to spend more time with his family, and between the lines it might be interpreted as wanting to spend less time with the GOP cohort in Congress and the anticipated tidal wave of change in the House.

Ryan didn't talk about his future plans, although some have speculated that he may run for President in 2020.

On the Republican side, Paul Nehlen, who threw his hat into the ring a year ago, said Ryan has a list of accomplishments but he can improve on them.

House Speaker Paul Ryan announced that he was not interested in seeking re-election. The loyalists to the president say you're betraying him.

Ryan's decision sets up a fight for the Republican leadership in the House, with majority leader Kevin McCarthy and majority whip Steve Scalise seen as the top contenders for the speakership.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called Ryan a "transformational conservative leader" and "happy warrior". We are proud of Paul and the work he has achieved over the years.

And because of that, Dent doesn't see Ryan's retirement as having any direct effect on GOP candidates' chances this fall.

Bryce had raised a staggering amount of money for a House challenger, thanks in part to his national profile garnered from a viral introduction video and the fact that he is taking one of the most powerful Republicans. "We all know that", Dent said. Ryan has held the seat that covers parts of southeastern Wisconsin for almost 20 years and plans to finish out his term.
