Houston Emergency Operator Gets Time in Prison, Probation for Dropping Calls

A former 911 operator has been sentenced to prison after police said she hung up "thousands" of times on people attempting to call in for emergencies.

Williams spent a year and a half taking 911 calls at the Houston Emergency Center until she was caught in August 2016 and fired by the city. Records revealed that thousands of short calls - from reports of robberies to homicides to speeding vehicles - were attributed to Williams hanging up.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg's office said upon interrogating Williams about the "shot calls", she admitted she hung up on many people calling for emergency aid between October 2015 and March 2016 because she did not feel like talking to people at the time.

A former 911 operator in Houston was convicted and sentenced Wednesday for hanging up on people calling to report an emergency. Ms Williams hung up because at those times she did not want to talk to anyone, she told investigators. She will spend 10 days in jail and 18 months on probation.

Harris County prosecutors said the county had an obligation to hold public servants criminally accountable when they break the law and the community's trust. "Short calls" are incoming calls with a duration of less than 20 seconds.

"The citizens of Harris County rely on 911 operators to dispatch help in their time of need". An ambulance arrived after a different operator answered a second call and the woman survived.

Although the call was disconnected, the recording captured Williams saying, "Ain't nobody got time for this".

Franklyn Bynum, the Houston emergency operator's court-appointed attorney declared that Williams' punishment is of little outcome as records reveal that ever since the 2003 renovation, the Houston Call Center has received numerous complaint of call dropping and inefficient call rerouting.

"She was going through a hard time in her life, and she was a poor performing worker at the Houston Emergency Center", Bynum said.
