Houthi drone downed in southern Saudi Arabia, Aramco operates normally, officials say

Saudi air defences intercepted a missile fired by Yemeni rebels at the kingdom's southern city of Jizan on Thursday, the Saudi-led coalition fighting the rebels said, the latest in a series of such attacks.

A missile was launched from Sadaa, the stronghold of Iran-backed Huthi rebels in northern Yemen, the coalition added.

An Associated Press reporter in Riyadh heard three loud explosions overhead just before sunset Wednesday.

Al-Masirah said the Houthis had also launched an attack with the same model of drone on the airport of Abha in neighbouring Asir province. At least one Saudi media outlet reported a drone crash at the airport had injured two airport workers.

Saudi Arabia has since March 2015 led a coalition of Arab states fighting to roll back the Huthi rebels in Yemen and restore its neighbour's internationally-recognised government to power.

In addition to the drone attack on Wednesday, Saudi intercepted a ballistic missile over Riyadh.

The group unveiled what it said was a series of drones, including the Qasef-1, at a ceremony previous year.

A week ago, Saudi air defense forces said they shot down a missile fired by the Houthis at the Aramco refinery in Jizan.

The arms monitor Conflict Armament Research (CAR) said it had evidence showing the Qasef-1 and other Houthi kit was made in Iran and was not of indigenous design and construction "in contrast to Houthi statements".

On April 3rd, Arab News reported that Houthi rebels attacked a Saudi oil tanker in the Red Sea, causing "minor damage" to the ship. While missile strikes against Riyadh are growing in frequency, the Houthis have more often targeted southern Saudi border cities and towns.
