Iran vows retaliation against alleged Israeli strike on Syrian airbase

The Russian Defense Ministry said on April 9 that two Israeli F-15 fighter jets had carried out a strike against Syria's T-4 airbase amid reports by Syrian media that the military facility had been targeted by missiles.

Early Monday, Syria's state news agency reported that missiles struck the base known as Tiyas airport.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights claims that 14 military personnel were killed in the Israel missile strike, Iranians among them.

The Iranian foreign ministry on Monday condemned the strike and called on "all free states... to not be indifferent to this flagrant Zionist aggression", after the United States, Russia and Syria all attributed the deadly strike to the Jewish State.

"The attack by the Zionist regime (of Israel) is a clear violation of worldwide laws and is in line with the enforcement of terrorist groups", Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said.

At least four Iranian military advisers were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Syria's T4 airbase, east of Homs, on Monday morning, it has been reported.

Israel is believed to have carried out numerous raids inside Syria since 2013, targeting the regime and its Lebanese arch-foe Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.

It is now generally assumed that Israel was the country behind the attack, though Israel has not responded to those claims.

However, immediately afterward, the Syrian announcement was changed to accuse Israel of attacking the Syrian air force base.

"We have a simple and clear rule and we make sure to give it constant expression: he who comes to strike you, rise up and strike him first", Netanyahu said during a visit to Sderot, a town nestled next to the fraught Gaza border fence.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump had promised a "big price to pay" for the suspected chemical attack on Douma.
