Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin apologizes for child sex abuse remarks

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin apologizes for child sex abuse remarks

"I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them", he said.

In a almost 4-minute video posted Sunday, Bevin didn't apologize for what he'd said, however - only that he took responsibility for not being clearer.

Matt Bevin (R) issued a wordy apology on Sunday after he essentially said, two days earlier, that protesting teachers were partially responsible for the sexual abuse of children.

At least 39 school districts in Kentucky had shut down on Friday as teachers traveled to the Capitol asking legislators to override Bevin's veto of state budget and tax reform bills. Bevin's remarks did not appear to explain how or why teachers could be held accountable for what occurs among students outside the classroom, and he did not provide evidence of any crimes that were committed.

Some educators on social media said they would wear black on Monday as a show of solidarity against what they viewed as Gov. Matt Bevin's negative comments about teachers.

The GOP-led Kentucky House later approved a pair of resolutions condemning Bevin's comments.

Bevin's comments came shortly after Republican lawmakers voted to override his vetoes of an operating budget that included increased spending for public education with the help of an accompanying tax increase. Cooper voted for Bevin in 2015 and vowed Saturday to not do it once more.

"I guarantee you somewhere today, a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them", he said, adding that "some were introduced to drugs for the first time because they were vulnerable and left alone".

And after watching the video Sunday, she stated, "Severely?" "There is no rational comment I could make to that", Winkler said, the Courier-Journal reported.

The teachers in Kentucky have also protested against changes to the state pension system, among the worst-funded in the nation, the Associated Press reported.

Teachers from across Kentucky gathered in the state Capitol to rally for increased funding for education on Friday. The demonstrations were inspired by West Virginia teachers, whose nine-day walkout after many years without raises led to a 5 percent pay hike.

"I don't want to be out of my classroom". "What Governor Bevin said about teachers following their peaceful rally yesterday was reprehensible, and we are proud to join with the many others who have condemned his petty, spiteful remarks".

The unrest comes amid teacher protests in Oklahoma and Arizona over low funding and teacher pay. They wanted the vetoes to stand, forcing the governor to call a special session of the state legislature to pass a new budget. "We have to have this revenue to fund our schools".
