Lee Ermey, 'Full Metal Jacket' Golden Globe Nominee, Dies at 74

Actor R. Lee Ermey, best known for his role as a tough drill instructor in "Full Metal Jacket" has died at age 74, his manager announced Sunday.

Lee Ermey, whose nickname was "The Gunny", was a real-life Parris Island Marine drill sergeant during the Vietnam War. He spent a year and two months in Vietnam from 1968 and was released from active military duty due to medical reasons in 1972.

Ermey, who typically played military roles in movies, enlisted in the Marine Corps at just 17 after his second arrest for criminal mischief.

He raked in more than 60 credits in film and television across his long career in the industry, often playing authority figures in everything from "Se7en" to "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake.

However, he got his major break in the cinema when Stanley Kubrick cast him as the foul-mouthed Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.

In a post on Facebook - since made inaccessible - his manager Bill Rogin said: "It is extremely hard to truly quantify all of the great things this man has selflessly done for, and on behalf of, our many men and women in uniform".

Mr. Ermey told The Times he had given up "a good job and more money" - a supervisory role at a nuclear power plant that was under construction - for the part in "Full Metal Jacket" a few years later.

"I used a quote of his from Full Metal Jacket for my senior year quote in high school, it's safe to say the yearbook committee didn't publish it". There are many Gunny's, but this one was OURS. It's a total bummer knowing that there won't be any more Ermey roles to look forward to.

"Kubrick ate it up", Ermey said. Please support your men and women in uniform.

"In the course of hiring the marine recruits, we interviewed hundreds of guys. And I love sunshine, I don't know about you".

A board member of the powerful National Rifle Association, Ermey also hosted weapons-related TV shows such as the History Channel's "Lock n' Load with R. Lee Ermey" and "GunnyTime with R. Lee Ermey" on the Outdoor Channel. He also lent his voice for the Toy Story films and SpongeBob SquarePants.

An outspoken conservative, Ermey spoke to Fox Information in 2016 about being "blackballed" from Hollywood over his political opinions.
