Mariah Carey Is Writing a Memoir

On Wednesday (11Apr18), Mariah went public with her diagnosis in a People magazine article, revealing she first learned she had the disorder in 2001, when she was hospitalised after suffering a physical and emotional breakdown, but she refused to believe it.

Although she was first diagnosed in 2001 (when she was hospitalized for a physical and mental breakdown), the singer revealed to PEOPLE's editor in chief Jess Cagle that she find it hard to believe.

The "I Don't" singer is now in therapy and taking medication to manage her condition.

Carey says, "I got back to doing what I love - writing songs and making music". Several mockingly wrote, "Not surprised", and one even took it further by saying, "If I were Mariah Carey I would've NEVER shared the face I was bipolar".

The singer also revealed she made a decision to come forward with her mental health battle in an effort to help lift the stigma surrounding mental health. "But it wasn't normal insomnia and I wasn't lying awake counting sheep". What this actually ended up being, though, was "a form of mania". I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down. Eventually I would just hit a wall.

Around 2.8 percent of United States adults experience bipolar disorder in a given year, according to the federal National Institute of Mental Health. I guess my depressive episodes were characterised by having very low energy.

Carey who was previously married to Hollywood actor Nick Cannon, father of her twins before dating Australian billionaire James Packer, said that she feared "someone would expose her".

"I'm hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone", she concluded. "[Bipolar disorder] does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me".
