Marlins CEO Derek Jeter 'not going' to Yankees series in Bronx

Marlins CEO Derek Jeter 'not going' to Yankees series in Bronx

But the New York Yankees legend says he doesn't have enough evidence to pass judgment.

The Bombers legend will not accompany his new team, the Marlins, to NY for a two-game series at Yankee Stadium beginning Monday. Jeter says he will make the trip but will not attend either of the games, this despite being a fan-favorite over his illustrious 20-year career donning pinstripes.

But Jeter talked to reporters Friday before the Marlins' game against the Pirates and said he won't be going to up to the Bronx, per MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

A question that Jeter didn't get is why he'd feel awkward returning to Yankee Stadium. Many games had a noticeably lower number of fans in the stands than the official attendance reported. "I'm just being honest with you guys".

Jeter is not happy with the low attendance numbers. I knew it was going to be a story, one way or the other.

Even though his time didn't end well in Miami, Giancarlo Stanton insisted he doesn't hold any ill-will toward his former team.

However, reported attendance numbers by the Marlins have been suspect for years.

"Our number one priority is how we can increase the attendance in this market", Jeter said.

"We're going to report tickets sold as our paid attendance", he said. It's going to be a while before Jeter gets them to a competitive level again. This weekend's series with the Pirates could be another series of low attendance numbers. "They're not really beating us down (on Sunday), but more like a couple (runs) here, another one, another one, another one".

"Our No. 1 focus is how we can win more games in this park, and winning more games is a part of it", Jeter said. Obviously he's involved with the Marlins now in a completely different capacity, but I think he's earned the right to step away and not show up for every function here and there that people maybe expect him to be. "You put a winning product on the field and people come". "We have to win these games". We're developing a winning culture, and sometimes it takes a little bit of time.

"I think part of that starts with the experience", Jeter said. So I think you at least let it go three or four weeks before you start passing out judgment. No one is happy with the results.

If you believe the rumors, Jeter's relationship with the Yankees has been strained since the 2013 offseason when his final-season contract negotiations didn't go smoothly.
