Michael Cohen Drops Defamation Lawsuits Against BuzzFeed, Dossier Firm

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's embattled attorney, has dropped two libel suits he had pursued against BuzzFeed over the website's publication of the so-called dossier that allegedly contains damning details about President Donald Trump.

Earlier this month, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents raided his home, personal office, and hotel room in an effort to seize documents related to his payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

"The decision to voluntarily discontinue these cases was a hard one", Cohen's attorney David Schwartz told the website.

Cohen's attorney told the outlet, "Given the events that have unfolded, and the time, attention, and resources needed to prosecute these matters, we have dismissed the matters, despite their merits".

Trump called the document "false and fake" and Cohen has denied he ever visited the Czech capital.

Cohen dropped both cases on Wednesday, Schwartz noted, after first lodging the complaints about the "Trump dossier", a series of unsubstantiated reports suggesting that Cohen may have had a hand in alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation that was published by BuzzFeed before the inauguration.

Daniels, who's real name is Stephanie Clifford, and her lawyer are challenging the validity of the agreement because they say the president never signed it.

Steele wrote the dossier on behalf of Fusion GPS, an opposition research firm that investigated Trump on behalf of the Clinton campaign and DNC during the 2016 campaign.

"You'll have to ask Michael Cohen", Trump said.

A recent report from McClatchy said that Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 US election, has found evidence that Cohen did travel to Prague. Among the records taken were those related to a 2016 payment Cohen made to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who claims to have had a sexual encounter with Trump.

McClatchy's reporting has not been confirmed by any other news organizations.

Cohen responded to the McClatchy piece on Saturday.

In a court document filed on Wednesday, Cohen's lawyer, David Schwartz, served notice that the lawsuit against BuzzFeed and four of its employees had been dropped.

Matt Mittenthal, director of communications for BuzzFeed News, said in a statement that the lawsuit never had merit. "Its interest to the public is, and always has been, obvious".

Cohen did not immediately return a request for comment.
