Missiles coming, Trump warns Syria and Russia

Missiles coming, Trump warns Syria and Russia

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders later insisted no final decisions had been taken and that "all options are on the table".

President Donald Trump was evasive Thursday over when the United States might fire missiles at Syria in retaliation for an alleged chemical weapons attack, saying they could come at any time.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was due to hold an emergency cabinet meeting amid speculation she will support U.S. action against the Syrian regime.

One day after warning regime-backer Russian Federation that "missiles will be coming" to Syria, Trump in another early morning tweet storm wrote: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place. Get ready, Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and smart!".

He told reporters that he and his team were looking "very, very seriously" at the situation, following an alleged chemical attack on the town of Douma.

The U.S., France and Britain have been in extensive consultations about launching a military strike as early as the end of this week, U.S. officials have said.

Cafarella said the United States must decide how far it wants to go in terms of hitting Iranian proxy forces near USA positions in eastern Syria, or even targeting Russian-supported facilities.

Douma, on the outskirts of Damascus, was the last rebel-held area in the eastern Ghouta region.

The Daily Telegraph in London reported Wednesday that May has ordered British submarines to move within missile range of Syria in readiness for strikes against the Assad regime that could begin as early as Thursday night.

Trump was apparently responding to a statement by Russia's ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin.

The PM said yesterday "all the indications" pointed towards the Syrian regime being behind a "shocking, barbaric act" in the town of Douma.

This comes after a suspected chemical attack in the city of Douma on Saturday, which is said to have killed at least 60 and injured 1,000 others.

The US, France and the United Kingdom have reportedly backed the US' plan of striking Syria, in response to the alleged chemical attack.

If Trump approves a more punishing campaign, USA commanders are likely to insist on taking out Syria's air defense systems, which reportedly include sophisticated Russian-supplied S-400 ground-to-air missile batteries.

He said it was not necessary for the U.S. Congress to give Trump a new authorization to use military force because the existing one "gives him the authority he needs to do what he may or may not do".

The Cabinet is expected to be asked to approve a form of British participation in action led by France and the United States, aimed at Syrian President Bashar al Assad's chemical weapons infrastructure.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria".

A US-led attack on Syria could inadvertently hit Russian or Iranian troops stationed throughout the country.

Trump is slated to speak with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May Thursday evening. The Syrian government and its ally Russian Federation have denied that such an attack ever happened.

Trump's decision to disclose his decision to strike as well as the kind of weaponry to be used in a future military operation was certain to frustrate military planners, who hold such information closely. But now that Assad's forces are dominant, Kupchan says, Russian has little influence over Assad, who brings negative attention to the alliance through his attacks on civilians, including with chemical weapons.

The Syrian president added that the threats endanger worldwide peace and security and that military action would only contribute to the "further destabilization" of the region.
