Mogherini on new sanctions against Iran

On April 8, Israel targeted Syria's T4 air base, killing 14 people including Iranian military advisers.

Israel still has not directly stated they were the ones who had launched airstrikes against Syria on April 9, although an Israeli military official reportedly told New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman that Israel did in fact launch the strikes.

During the operation, two IRGC forces also lost their lives and two other were wounded when their vehicle hit a booby trap, the statement said, adding that an Iranian border guard was also killed in the abortive attack.

"The range of the missile has doubled to fly 8 to 12km farther compared with the previous version and given the regional threats that we are facing, they can be highly effective in combats in short-range combat zones", Iranian Airborne Commander Yousef Qorbani told Iranian media. Israel blew up the drone and carried out a raid on Syrian air defenses in which one of its F-16 jets was downed.

The most recent strike on Iran last week, now confirmed by an Israel official, was reportedly targeted at Iran's drone program in retaliation. "To Iran, and to Russian Federation, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women, and children?"

The Iranian foreign minister's remarks come ahead of a May 12 deadline for US President Donald Trump to decide whether to extend waivers of economic sanctions on Iran.

Israel's Channel 10 news described the event as bringing the confrontation between arch-foes Iran and Israel "into the open" for the first time.

"Israel will receive the required responses sooner or later", Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi declared at his weekly briefing with journalists in Tehran.

The Revolutionary Guards have been operating three main offensive projects against Israel.

Iran is a close ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad and it has lent his forces significant logistical, technical and financial support in their war against the rebels.
