Moscow Rejects to Comment on Reports About New US Sanctions

Chemical weapons inspectors in Syria said Monday that they suspected the site of an alleged chemical attack had been tampered with, as pro-government media broadcast interviews with doctors from the area saying that no such assault had occurred and that the victims they treated were suffering from asthma. When asked about the matter during a television interview, however, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insisted "that Russia has not tampered with the site".

He spoke as the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) watchdog held an urgent meeting.

Mr Lavrov also questioned why the U.S. and its allies carried out air strikes the day before global inspectors were due to arrive at the site. Footage of young victims foaming at the mouth and weeping in agony helped to thrust Syria's civil war - in which half a million people have been killed in the past seven years - to the forefront of world concern again. The OPCW previously said that "Syria and Russian Federation were concerned that security on the ground could not be guaranteed" for its team, but Lavrov echoed the Kremlin's prior "fabrication" claims outright.

Inspectors from the worldwide chemical weapons watchdog met Syrian officials in Damascus on Monday but have so far been denied access to the former rebel stronghold where the alleged use of toxic substances provoked a US-led strike.

"We are considering additional sanctions on Russian Federation and a decision will be made in the near future", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in a statement on Monday.

The ruble swung between gains and losses as investors braced for the announcement of new us sanctions aimed at punishing the Kremlin for its backing of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

"You will see that Russian sanctions will be coming down", Haley said.

The Russian Defense Ministry on Friday accused Britain of staging a fake chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma last weekend, a bold charge that comes amid Moscow's stern warnings to the West against striking Syria.

"Chemical weapons were used on Syrian men, women, and children in #Douma".

The Syrian regime and Russian Federation deny chemical weapons were used in the final offensive that captured Douma, a rebel-held territory east of Damascus.

"So I think everyone is going to be feeling it at this point".

"What (Trump) has done is talked to our allies and said they need to step up more".

US President Donald Trump tweeted "Mission Accomplished" on Saturday after US, French and British military aircraft and warships launched more than 100 cruise missiles inside Syria over the suspected poison gas attack. "It is the only way to prevent the use of chemical weapons in the future". Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, has questioned the legal basis for Britain's involvement.

Meanwhile, media reports noted that the United Kingdom government has confirmed a "20-fold" increase in disinformation being spread by Kremlin-linked social media "bot" accounts since the United Kingdom, USA and France attacked Syria's chemical weapons infrastructure on Saturday. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Monday will respond to their criticism in a debate in parliament on Monday afternoon.
