National Football League to prohibit 10 helmet models due to player safety

NEW YORK (AP) - The NFL for the first time is prohibiting certain helmets from being worn by players.

According to the release: "The prohibited helmets perform poorly in laboratory testing, have been discontinued by the manufacturer, or were produced by companies no longer manufacturing football helmets".

According to ESPN, thirty-four helmets were tested for safety, and 10 helmets that finished at the bottom of the rankings were listed as prohibited.

The prohibited helmet models are: Rawlings' Impulse and Impulse+, Quantum and Tachyon; SG Varsity and SG 2.0; Schutt Vengeance Z10 (model 204100), Air XP (model 789002) and Air XP Pro (model 789102); and Riddell VSR-4 (model R41133).

Results were shared with National Football League players, equipment managers, coaches and medical staffs as the study examined which helmets reduced the severity of head impacts.

Six helmets were immediately prohibited, while four of them were still allowed only for players that used them in the 2017 season and are prohibited for new players.

The lab test includes rotational velocity and acceleration as part of a "combined metric" in helmet evaluation.

According to a story by NFL.com, about 200 players wore one of the 10 banned models in 2017.

"Over the last few years, we've seen some dynamic changes in the helmet industry", Miller said.

"We've begun to see that over the last couple of years, players [are] moving from helmets that rank in the poorly performing areas to those that are ranging closer to the top-performing helmets", Miller said. "It's an important step for player safety".

"The goal of the continuation to rank helmets and the joint decision with the players' association to prohibit is to increase that movement into better performing helmets".

The NFL has been ranking helmets based on laboratory testing, for four years.

Inside the helmet contains a layer of vertical columns that bend upon impact, which helps to absorb the collision and protect the player.

Two companies, Ridell and Schutt, claim 90 percent of the USA market. Helmets are ranked on how they "manage the forces" that players most often come into contact with, he added.
