Nerlens Noel already had multiple drug strikes before suspension

A nightmarish season for Nerlens Noel ended Tuesday with news that the National Basketball Association has handed down a five-game suspension for violation of the league's anti-drug program.

The program states that players are suspended five games after a third positive test for marijuana.

A brief statement from the league said Noel's suspension would begin immediately, starting with Tuesday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Noel's suspension begins Tuesday night and Sefolosha, who has been out of action since January following knee surgery, will serve his suspension when he is physically able to play.

Noel has started just six games during a turbulent 2017-18 season with Dallas. The 33-year-old had surgery to fix an avulsion of the medial collateral ligament in January and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. His tenure with the Mavs might best be characterized by his decision to visit the media dining room to get a hot dog at halftime of a December 2 game in which he did not play because of a coach's decision.

The specifics are disputed, but Noel may have turned down a 4-year, $70 million contract last offseason with the Mavericks.

In his only season at Kentucky, Noel averaged 10.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.4 blocks per game.

The Jazz have a team option on Sefolosha's $5.25 million salary next season.
