Nigeria's Boko Haram has abducted more than 1000 children since 2013

The agency mentioned an interview it had with one of the victims of the insurgent group, a young woman now 17, named Khadija who had been abducted by Boko Haram following an attack on her town.

The militants regularly took youngsters to spread fear and show power, the agency said on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the abduction of 276 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok, a case that triggered global outrage.

UNICEF said it had verified at least 1,000 kidnapping cases, but warned the actual figure could be much higher.

"They are consistently targeted and exposed to brutal violence in their homes, schools and public places", said UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall.

In the statement, UNICEF representative in Nigeria, Mohammed Malick Fall, said since the conflict started in the North-eastern Nigeria almost nine years ago, at least 2,295 teachers have been killed and more than 1,400 schools have been destroyed, leaving most of these schools closed because of extensive damage or ongoing insecurity.

UNICEF is appealing for an end to attacks on schools and all grave violations of children's rights.

The Federal Government created Boko Haram since it is not taking the fight to halt the terror group serious, says the Shehu of Bama in Borno State, Shehu Kyari Ibn Umar El-Kanemi.

The Boko Haram conflict is in its tenth year, but shows little sign of ending. Nearly all of the captured girls were later released after about month following negotiations with the federal government. About five died while in Boko Haram hands.

Boko Haram remains a charged issue politically.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was elected in 2015 on a promise to stamp out Boko Haram's insurgency.

According to the monarch, Boko Haram's killing spree is an indication that the government has failed in taming it.
