PM pledges £60m package to fight plastic pollution at CHOGM

Researchers in the US and Britain have accidentally engineered an enzyme which eats plastic and may eventually help solve the growing problem of plastic pollution, a study said Monday.

Bottles made from PET are used to package 70 per cent of soft drinks, fruit juices and water sold in shops, restaurants and supermarkets.

Although said to be highly recyclable, PET persists for hundreds of years.

The team had been looking originally at another enzyme called PETease which had evolved in a waste recycling centre in Japan.

According to John McGeehan, a professor at the University of Portsmouth, UK who led the research, "What we are hoping to do is use this enzyme to turn this plastic back into its original components, so we can literally recycle it back to plastic".

While probing the molecular structure of PETase, the United Kingdom team inadvertently created a powerful new version of the protein.

John McGeehan, a professor at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom who co-led the work, said that the discovery was very exciting because it meant that "there's potential to optimise the enzyme even further".

Using a super-powerful X-ray, 10 billion times brighter than the Sun, they were able to make an ultra-high-resolution three-dimensional model of the enzyme. "Although the improvement is modest, this unanticipated discovery suggests there is room to further improve these enzymes, moving us closer to a recycling solution for the ever-growing mountain of discarded plastics". When the team tweaked the enzyme to study the link, they unexpectedly improved its ability to eat PET. The goal was to determine its structure, but ended up going a step further and the team accidentally engineered an enzyme which was even better at breaking down PET. Details of the breakthrough are published in the scientific journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The federation added: "The BPF welcomes the opportunity to have a discussion about the right interventions to reduce plastic waste and as an industry are committed to adding our expertise to help work with other Commonwealth countries to reach effective solutions".

The cash will be used for grants, innovation challenges and events to raise the profile of the plastic problem and fund the development of alternative materials and new, zero-waste manufacturing processes.
