Reportedly Gmail is testing confidential emails that expire automatically

The new Gmail design also features a new sidebar, with the option of using Google's calendar, Keep note-taking app, or tasks side-by-side with your email messages. Apparently, the new self-destructing emails feature which will allow the users to put a timestamp to their mails after which the email won't be available anymore has been termed as the "Confidential Mode" in Gmail. The Verge has obtained screenshots of the new Gmail design, now being tested inside Google and with trusted partners.

Google has kept in mind all of its users and developed the Confidential Mode in a backward compatible way, which means that users of the earlier version of Gmail will also be able to receive the messages in Confidential Mode via a link. The refreshed design will appear for Gmail users on the web, bringing it closer to the company's tweaks for Gmail on mobile devices.

Such emails can also be passcode-locked and can only be opened if you enter the correct passcode which will be sent to your phone via SMS.

It is believed that Google is working on a lock icon to activate the mode that will be introduced with the new design of the Gmail. A user can set the expiration date for the email following which the mail would be deleted at the time set by the user.

The report further suggests that the Confidential Mode is said to allow the users to send self-destructing emails which can be set to prevent the recipient from downloading, forwarding, printing or even copying email content. The compact view is the most similar to the existing Gmail design, allowing existing users to keep a similar layout. Notably, it looks like recipients of the confidential email will have to log into their Google accounts once again to read the email.

As of now, there is no information about this feature being available to non-Gmail users.
