Russia Mastered Jamming US Drones in Syria

The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said the Syrian government and its Russian allies invited it to send in a fact-finding mission.

President Donald Trump says the USA has many military options as it decides how to respond to an apparent poison gas attack in central Syria that killed more than 40 people.

Trump has now cancelled this week's planned trip to Latin America "to oversee the American response to Syria and to monitor developments around the world", according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders.

The US-Russia showdown at the Security Council comes amid warnings from President Donald Trump that there will be a "big price to pay" for the alleged attack in Douma.

"It would also create a new investigative mechanism to look into chemical weapons attacks in Syria and determine who is responsible".

Anticipating a retaliatory attack from the USA, and after Russia jammed some less significant US drones following suspected chemical weapons attacks on civilians in eastern Ghouta several weeks ago, Russians started jamming major USA drones in Syria, according to the four officials.

It's not clear how the OPCW inspection in Syria would impact the timing of potential US military action. A Navy destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, got underway in the eastern Mediterranean on Monday after completing a port call in Cyprus.

"They were faced with the prospect of a very ugly extended fight in this built-up area against a pretty tough and experienced enemy?- Jaish al-Islam?- or using chemical weapons", he said. The guided missile destroyer is armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, the weapon of choice in a US attack one year ago on an airfield in Syria following an alleged sarin gas attack on civilians.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused the United States of "planting this resolution" as a "pretext" to justify action against Syria. "To me there's not much of a doubt, but the generals will figure it out", Trump said.

Trump, asked whether Russian President Vladimir Putin bore any responsibility, responded, "He may, yeah, he may".

"Whenever we propose anything meaningful on Syria, Russia vetoes it".

After warning Monday of "grave repercussions" of U.S. military action, the Russian ambassador urged the United States to "come to your senses" and refrain from ordering strikes on Syria.

Russian Federation has previously voted to block a resolution that would give United Nations investigators a wider mandate on chemical weapons in Syria, Michele added. Bolivia voted against the draft resolution, while China abstained.

Syria's regime has denied dropping toxic weapons on Eastern Ghouta, but analysts say they could have been used as a tactic to finally reconquer the last rebel enclave outside Damascus. When Trump ordered airstrikes a year ago after a chemical weapons attack, it was a response to the use of sarin gas, which is banned by the Chemical Weapons Convention that Syria has signed.
