Samsung faces patent infringement lawsuit over biometrics

Remember the patent infringement suit that Samsung filed against Apple back in the day? PACid asserts that the PASS biometric authentication and KNOX security systems used in the Samsung devices infringe on three patented encryption technologies from PACid, one of which is filed in Korea and the other two in the US.

Samsung Electronics Co.is focusing on expanding its patent holdings in the United States, industry sources said Friday, amid intensifying industrywide intellectual property rights disputes. The specific phones named in the suit include the Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+, Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8+.

The South Korean company held 119,337 patents around the globe as of end-2017, with the USA accounting for 46,150, followed by South Korea with 24,860 and Europe with 10,509.

Some entities have previously accused PACid of being a patent troll, an allegation it references on its website, saying, "They call us names because they prefer to steal our ideas than pay for them".

Nevertheless, let's see how the Korean company will handle this particular lawsuit from PACid.

We're not sure if there is truth to the lawsuit because PACid is unknown but it has already filed similar ones against Nintendo, Apple, and Google.

The news arrives via The Investor and ETNews, which cited a complaint filed with the Texas Eastern District Court on April 6. There is a possibility that lawsuit against Samsung could end up being just another addition to its laundry list of lawsuits against large corporations.
