Schools closed in Dammam as Arab summit opens today

The yearly Arab League (AL) Summit concluded here with unwavering stands for preserving regional peace and unity, especially the problems related to Jerusalem, Syria, Yemen and Iran.

The interference of several countries, namely Iran and Turkey, in the internal affairs of some Arab countries is among those items.

Delegates pledged to support the Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.

On Sunday, King Salman made it clear he was unhappy with Mr Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, an opinion backed by the other leaders at the summit.

Asharq Al-Awsat received Friday a copy of the draft closing statement and draft resolutions agreed on by Arab foreign ministers following their preparatory meetings held last Thursday in Saudi Arabia ahead of the summit.

"We've never seen the Arab world in such bad shape with leadership not able to cope with the challenges facing the Arab world, so much so that most of the points of contention that the Arab leaders don't agree to were not put on the agenda and the ones that they agreed to were put on the agenda", said Al Jazeera's Bishara.

"We reiterate our rejection of the USA decision on Jerusalem", the king said in a speech in Dhahran in eastern Saudi Arabia.

Its delegation was headed by its permanent representative to the Arab League, Saif bin Muqaddam al-Buainain, Qatar's state news agency said.

The Arab League - minus Syria and Qatar - said after its summit on Sunday that the "criminal" use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime had to be investigated.

"The Palestinian cause is our primary cause and it will remain so until our fraternal Palestinian people obtain all of their legitimate rights, starting with the establishment of an independent state, whose capital is east Jerusalem", he stressed.

King Salman expressed his strong condemnation to the "Iranian-allied" Houthi militants' attacks on different cities of Saudi Arabia.

The two regional titans, locked in proxy wars in Syria and in Saudi Arabia's southern neighbour Yemen, back opposing parties in Iraq and Lebanon.

"We reject its blatant meddling in the internal affairs of Arab countries", declared King Salman.

He welcomed in this regard the United Nations Security Council statement that strongly condemned the Houthis for firing missiles against Saudi cities.

The stand-off between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt is also not expected to feature.

The Arab League was founded in 1945 to protect newly-won independence throughout the region.
