Shalane Flanagan takes port-a-potty detour at Boston Marathon

Shalane Flanagan takes port-a-potty detour at Boston Marathon

Desiree Linden, a two-time Olympian and runner up in the 2011 Boston Marathon, finished the 42-kilometer race in two hours, 39 minutes, 54 seconds - a full four minutes faster than the second-place runner.

“For me, its the best conditions possible, ” said Kawauchi, who competed in 12 marathons past year — six times the usual number for an elite runner — and also works as a school administrator. Watch Linden's historic finish below.

Fear took over for Linden, as she still didn't expect to win.

Hometown favorite Shalane Flanagan, a four-time Olympian and the reigning New York City Marathon champion, finished sixth after popping into a course-side portable toilet before the halfway point and falling behind the lead pack. The winning time of 2:15:58 and was the slowest since Jack Fultz overcame temperatures in the high 90s to win the "Run for the Hoses" in 1976.

"I told [Flanagan] during the race, 'If there's anything I can do to help you out, let me know, because I might just drop out.' When you work together, you never know what's going to happen".

"I definitely would have slowed down (if I knew I had a big lead)". In 2011, she lost the marathon by a mere two seconds - but the defeat pushed her to continue trying.

“I could start to feel my arms getting heavy just from all the rain soaking in, ” she said.

While hardly anyone expected Linden or Kawauchi to triumph in Boston, they both had experience racing in awful weather and it was in each other's home countries. Tatyana McFadden won her fifth women's push rim wheelchair title and her 22nd overall in world marathon majors, the most of any women's wheelchair athlete.

Yuki Kawauchi splashed through the pelting rain, temperatures in the mid-30s and wind that gusted as high as 32 miles per hour to win the mens race, passing defending champion Geoffrey Kirui in Kenmore Square to earn Japans first Boston title since 1987 and the $150,000 first prize.

"Even on a day like today where it's pretty miserable out", she added, "people show up and they embrace the race". I could see him.

"I don't have the right words".

"Helping her helped me, and I kinda got my legs back from there".

The 31-year-old ran 12 marathons in 2017, winning five of them. Callinan celebrated her 18th birthday on Monday, making her the youngest runner in this year's race. "I could see somebody coming back but I wasn't sure it was Kirui".
