Soulful Nina Simone inducted into Rock Hall

Soulful Nina Simone inducted into Rock Hall

Can you get your Dire Straits facts straight?

Other celebrities to walk the red carpet included Howard Stern, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues, Brandon Flowers of The Killers, Ann Wilson, The Roots and many more.

Bon Jovi plays the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2018 induction Ceremony or wait until it airs on HBO starting on Saturday May 5. Flowers recalled the first time he heard The Cars while growing up in a tiny, "no stoplight" town in Utah, saying "40 years later they still sound like a new band to me".

Featuring food from notable city chefs, it was a kind of calm before the ceremony storm (both literally and figuratively given thunderstorm predictions for Saturday) - albeit a loud kind of calm thanks to music from Philadelphia's Low Cut Connie, which covered favorites by Rock Hall inductees and also dedicated a version of Black Sabbath's "Changes" to the late Charles Bradley, who had covered the song. New Rochelle resident Jennifer Vivolo-Carsen says Bon Jovi has been a part of the soundtrack of her life.

The 33rd annual Rock Hall ceremony kicked off with a tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October at age 66.

Founded in Boston, The Cars had a strong connection to Cleveland, the hometown of late bassist Benjamin Orr, who sang lead vocals on some the band's biggest hits like "Just What I Needed", "Bye Bye Love" and "Drive".

Other artists who will be inducted are Dire Straits, Nina Simone and the Moody Blues. It was a surprise for the group members in attendance: Jon Bon Jovi (with his wife and four children), David Bryan, Tico Torres, Hugh McDonald, Richie Sambora, and Alec John Such (who will be inducted tonight).

A flawless Brittany Howard, of the critically acclaimed rock act Alabama Shakes, gave an extraordinary Tharpe impression onstage, winning over the audience with her rousing live performance in honor of the godmother of rock "n" roll.

Frontman Mark Knopfler and his brother, rhythm guitarist David Knopfler, won't be attending.
